Experience

Legal Roles

Prior to joining McIntyre Szabo PC, Anne (she/her) gained both in-house and private practice experience in professional regulation. Prior to her career as a lawyer, Anne worked for the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (“PARO”), where she assisted medical residents with their educational and professional needs during residency training. She then articled for the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, then acted as prosecutor and general counsel to the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. Anne then worked at a boutique law firm where she defended regulated professionals in complaints, investigations, disciplinary proceedings and provided advice on licensing, registration and practice management issues.

Practice Areas

Anne represents and advises clients in the health care sector, including healthcare institutions (regulators, multidisciplinary clinics, and professional associations) as well as regulated health practitioners and other regulated professionals. She is building a broad-based health litigation practice at McIntyre Szabo PC, including professional regulation, mental health hearings and appeals, physician privileging, human rights applications and inquests. Anne is particularly interested in complex issues involving constitutional law, off-duty conduct, and regulatory investigations.

Courts & Tribunals

Anne has regularly appeared before the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, Licence Appeal Tribunal, the Ontario Review Board and various regulatory Tribunals. She has argued several cases at the Divisional Court, and has appeared before all levels of Court in Ontario, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and the Small Claims Court.

Health Industry

Anne has a gained a deep understanding of the practical concerns facing health care providers on a day-to-day basis through her work with regulated health professionals and hospitals. Prior to studying law, Anne worked for the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (“PARO”), where she assisted medical residents with their professional, academic and wellness needs. In this role, she helped find solutions to complex issues involving teaching hospitals, university programs and the Ministry of Health.

External Activities

Anne is consistently looking for opportunities to hone her litigation skills. She is an active member of The Advocates Society, and has completed the TAS Civil Litigation Skills Certificate program.  Anne also speaks on health-related topics at the OBA and other professional conferences and events.  

Outside the Law

Anne is an avid, but uncoordinated, fitness enthusiast. She tries to keep active through boxing classes, rowing and cycling. She also leads her trivia team to a solid fifth place finish at least once a month. Anne tries to give back to her community through various initiatives.

  • Frazer (Re), (2025, Court of Appeal) - represented a hospital in an Ontario Review Board appeal regarding significant risk and cannabis use

  • Salyk v. Soliman (2025, HPARB) - successfully defended a dentist in an appeal to the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board from an ICRC decision to take no further action

  • Bortolon v. College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (2025, Divisional Court) - successfully represented, as lead counsel, an occupational therapist on judicial review in overturning a remedial order by the College due to lack of procedural fairness, without being remitted back to the College

  • Axenova v Deporter et al. (2025, HPARB) – successfully defended seven dentists in an appeal of seven separate ICRC decisions to take no further action on complaints relating to treatment

  • In the Matter of RS (Re), (2024, Consent and Capacity Board) – successfully represented a psychiatrist in upholding a community treatment order

  • Hunter (Re) , (2024, Court of Appeal) – acted as co-counsel for a Hospital in an Ontario Review Board appeal regarding the Board’s inquisitorial function

  • Riedl v. Robinson (2024, HPARB) - successfully defended a dentist in an appeal of an ICRC decision to take no further action on a complaint relating to treatment with a dental appliance

  • J.T. Secure Treatment Application (2024, Superior Court) - represented a Hospital in obtaining a secure treatment application for a minor

  • Cooper (Re) (2024, Court of Appeal) - successfully represented a Hospital in an Ontario Review Board appeal regarding Gladue reports

  • Inquest into the Death of Attila Csanyi (2024, Coroner’s Inquest) - represented a Hospital as a party in the discretionary inquest

  • Leontowicz v. the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (2024, HPARB) - represented the Applicant in his challenge to the decision of the CPSO’s Registration Committee to refuse him a certificate of registration authorizing postgraduate training in Ontario

  • Hamelin v. Georgian Bay General Hospital, et al (2024, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario) - successfully represented the Hospital and its staff in securing a summary dismissal of the matter on the basis that it had no reasonable prospect of success

  • Ali v. College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (2023, Divisional Court) – defended a physician accused of historic misconduct (unreported)
